GET IN THE BOX CO. // PRODUCT REVIEW

A little while back, I had a lovely surprise land on my doorstep. A flat, A4 sized box made its way through the letterbox & landed neatly on the floor. The box was in fact a ‘classic’ box from @getintheboxco. The box was packed full of sweetie treats, including many family favourites, from Haribo to marshmallows, my favourite bubblegum bottles & many more.

These boxes are a fabulous way of getting a treat to someone contact-free, or even surprises kids with their very own bit of post. The boxes can be personalised making them an ideal gift, plus there are heaps of different types of boxes to choose from, including different sizes, as well as different themes. (I absolutely LOVED the look of the spooktacular halloween boxes). There are some exciting Christmas boxes coming up too!

What was also fantastic about these, was not only were they super-yummy & moreish (once you start eating sweets, you just cannot stop, who’s with me?!), there was also a sheet laid neatly in the box too stating each & every sweet, & all of the ingredients – something that isn’t so much thought of! ⭐️

These sweeties were an absolute treat and were needless to say, demolished in no time at all.

A huge thank you to @getinthebox co for getting these over – they were AWESOME. [GIFTED]

TAPP’D COCKTAILS // PRODUCT REVIEW

If you’re as much of a social media addict as I am, then I’m sure over the last few months at some point you would’ve seen Tapp’d appear on your news feed somewhere. It’s hard to escape these guys when they have the likes of Kate Wright & Rio Ferdinand, Denise Van Outen ordering regularly, to name a few. For those not so much on social media, perhaps you caught Tapp’d making an appearance on none other than This Morning, where Phil & Holly sampled their cocktails.

I have seen this company all over my social media feeds but had never really considered ordering from them (I’m more of a make-it-yourself-er) so when Tapp’d got in contact, I was thrilled! They offer a variety of cocktails which are easily ordered online, & they also offer same day delivery (please check this before placing your order as there is an extra cost). Ideal if you fancy a treat, or perhaps if you’re laying on a bit of an occasion – I’ve seen plenty of posts where the cocktails have been paired up alongside afternoon teas.

So I was lucky enough to receive a mixed box of cocktails, which consisted of;
– Espresso Martini
– Mojito
– Sex On The Beach
– Strawberry Daiquiri
– Pornstar Martini x2

Each & every cocktail was sensational! They really were delicious, they didn’t last us any longer than about an hour (terrible, I know!) but I can see why the cocktails have proved to be so popular. In particular, I was extremely impressed with the Espresso Martini – the cocktail had a deep vanilla taste to it, it was absolutely gorgeous! I would 100% order an entire case of just these. I also loved the fact that the SOTB cocktail was glittery (perfect for Boomeranging!)

I would definitely recommend checking Tapp’d out, & if you can, get some ordered in – the cocktails were genuinely lush, & their popularity among the famous names says it all. I look forward to sipping in the near future! [GIFTED]

BAKE WITH A LEGEND // VIRTUAL BAKING CLASS

BAKE WITH A LEGEND!

… That’s exactly what we did, and you can too!
Bake With a Legend is a fantastic company who allow the public to try their baking skills alongside former Bake Off contestants. What they offer is bespoke baking classes, both classes in person (pre Covid, they hope to resume these January 2021), & virtual classes. The virtual classes obviously can be attended from the comfort of your own home, whilst the classes/workshops are held in 2 locations, London & Manchester.

You can be a baker of absolutely any level to join in, as you’ll have guidance throughout, and you’ll be in the right hands clearly, as these legends have made it to tv, & have all the tips & tricks up their sleeves to help along the way, perfect if you’re an amateur (like we were, & still are).

Our particular class was with Howard Middleton & the ‘bake’ which we were making was Black Forest Chocolate Eclairs. They sounded delicious, everyone else’s looked delicious, but honestly, ours came out absolutely awful, to the point where it took 3 attempts of making the choux pastry & it was still a bit of a let down – we think we will probably swerve making any choux pastry in future! This was absolutely nothing to do with the class (it couldn’t have been as everyone else’s came out spot on), we put it down to how well we beat our mix. Trial & error!

The class itself was very useful. We had Howard there baking along with us, so any problems, or any questions, we were able to fire straight at him, & we had Josh (founder of Bake With a Legend) there to run the class, & make sure everyone knew where they were, & give everyone a chance to catch up if they’d fallen behind. Prior to the class, we were given a list of ingredients which were easy enough to source, we were also given a recipe to follow (this was really helpful to have to hand if you got sort of lost anywhere along the way & just sort of check we were in the right place without causing a disturbance) & we were given the Zoom login to attend the class. Everything was made really clear & really simplified, so a great way of learning.

It was a little bit chaotic, but when isn’t it when baking? This was more because we got a little bit panicky when our mix wasn’t coming together as well as the others’ in the class, but Howard was there to reassure us we were doing okay!

We enjoyed the class, we found it extremely helpful to have the guidance & advice from a baking legend & it was lovely seeing everyone’s end results! We certainly won’t be applying for Bake Off any time soon however, we’ve learnt that choux pastry (although we can’t quite crack it) isn’t as daunting as you may think to make, takes few ingredients & it can be done. WE WILL GET THERE!

This is definitely an experience to get involved with if you’re an avid baker, or even if you just want to try something new. There are a whole range of classes available, & all can be booked online at bakewithalegend.com.

A huge thank you to all involved – Howard for helping us along the way, Josh for putting this altogether & Cait at Full Volume PR for giving us the chance to get involved! [GIFTED]

SHWINGS (CHELMSFORD) // RESTAURANT REVIEW

A couple of weekends back we were invited down to one of Chelmsford’s best restaurants, Shwings, in order to see what their Sunday roast was all about. Being a Shwings fan anyway, I had high hopes for this dinner, & I can confirm it did not let me down. The other half of the party, was until this point, a Shwings virgin. He has now seen the light & has safely been converted, all thanks to this phenomenal roast dinner. So first things first, service was exceptional as it always is at this place, friendly & welcoming, efficient, not pushy, recommendations made, it’s all there. Service is also very prompt, our food was served within ten minutes of being seated. Needless to say, we both went for the roast, we both had the 3 course roast and a platter of wings to share (you can’t visit this place & not have them), plus as mentioned, the other half had not visited, so he needed to try all of those flavours! There have also been some new flavour additions since my last visit, so again, it needed to be done.

We kicked our meal off with a couple of starters which were halloumi sticks with chilli jam, which just so happened to be the best chilli jam ever & fried pickles served with a blue cheese dip (I LOVE blue cheese but I know this isn’t to everyone’s taste, but try it, it’s really good, & it isn’t too strong here!) The starters were devoured in about 2 minutes between the pair of us, & we were impressed with what we got. We had huge expectations with what was to follow…

The roast comes in at £15, plus you can upgrade & add starter/dessert for extra £££. The roast itself is made up of 1/2 chicken, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding plus your choice of 2 veggie sides, as well as a very generous jug of the Shwings gravy. The veggie choices include minted peas, garlic carrots, cauliflower cheese & red cabbage with apple. Each of us opted for cauliflower cheese (who doesn’t go for cauliflower cheese?!), as it’s a favourite & also as we were recommended this. I am not lying, this is by far the best cauliflower cheese I’ve ever had, soft cauliflower smothered in a blanket of melted, gooey cheese, mmm! The other sides we chose were the garlic carrots & the red cabbage with apple. The garlic carrots were nice & light, not too heavy on the garlic, balanced just right, & the cabbage was triumphant to say the least! This was the first time I’ve ever tried this particular dish, & it was SO YUMMY. I enjoyed it so much, the first thing I did when I got back home was Google the recipe – this was some top notch stuff! To be impressed by just the veg alone, I think speaks volumes! Of course, the rest of the roast was absolutely wicked, the roast potatoes were perfectly crispy, the Yorkshire pud stood tall & provided sanctum for the delicious gravy (which had a rather nice white wine twang to it – really yummy), & the chicken was spot on, lovely & soft, fell straight off the bone & had the most perfect, crispy skin known to man (I’m an absolute sucker for chicken skin, I don’t care how terrible it is for you!) This really was one hell of a roast, & I would 100% urge you to try it out if you haven’t already.

After smashing through the roast, we ploughed our way through the platter of wings. The platter consists of 9 different flavoured wings, the flavours are;
– Buffalo
– Honey & chilli (my all time favourite)
– Hoisin
– Sticky orange
– Smoked BBQ
– Jerk
– Sweet Thai chilli
– Shwings, which is sriracha & miso
– Da Guv’na, which is a grilled wing in Shwing’s very own blend of herbs & spices
All of the above were delicious, as expected. Each & every one has such a unique taste, sometimes it can be hard to decide which is the favourite! The new flavours definitely throw a spanner in the works but I just don’t think anything would ever come between me & my love for the honey & chilli wings.

Following this chicken-based feast, we did, believe it or not, manage to do dessert as well (it took a bit of a breather, but yes, we did it) & we enjoyed sticky toffee pudding (our favourite dessert), this was lovely & fluffy, really deep in flavour, & the best Biscoff cheesecake known to man!! I’ve had a lot of these Biscoff cheesecakes but the time has come, & I’ve found the best one.

Shwings is by far one of the best places to eat in Chelmsford, they know what they’re doing & they do it well, hence the success they have. It wouldn’t have been the most obvious choice for me if you said pick somewhere to go for Sunday lunch in Chelmsford, but I’ve now tried it & love it. I would recommend giving it a try yourself, alllll day long.
A very special thank you to Mark for inviting us down & a huge thank you to all the team who looked after us – genuinely the loveliest, friendliest staff going. [GIFTED]

SQUEAKY BEAN ROAST CHICKEN SLICES // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to Eden Green PR for the following content

Plant-based Roast Chicken Flavour Sandwich Slices come to Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.
Squeaky Bean®’s latest launch revolutionises meat-free sandwiches

Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are expanding their plant-based range with the introduction of Squeaky Bean’s vegan Roast Chicken Flavour Sandwich Slices. The new product will launch into 221 Sainsbury’s stores on 21 September, as well as 155 Waitrose stores on 30 September.

Perfect for eating straight from the pack or making a flavourful sandwich filling or salad accompaniment, Squeaky Bean’s Roast Chicken Flavour Slices are a deliciously savoury addition to any plant-based lunch.
The new product was developed as a result of strong demand for Squeaky Bean’s existing range of Pastrami and Ham Style Slices. The realistic and succulent texture is sure to cause a flutter among consumers who are simply looking to reduce their meat intake, as well as those who are committed to a vegan diet.
Made from wildly delicious plants, including wheat, tofu and herbs, the Roast Chicken Style Slices are high in protein.

Packaged with sustainability in mind, the Slices are encased in a recyclable paper container with a peelable film lid. Each pack bears the recognisable bright Squeaky Bean branding, ensuring the Slices stand out on shelves.
In a recent survey from the British Sandwich Association, chicken topped the list of the nation’s favourite sandwich fillings. In combination with other ingredients, such as stuffing, it also featured a further two times in the list of the top nine sandwiches.

These favourite fillings contribute to more than 43,000 tonnes of chicken being consumed every year in the sandwich market alone. However, with the launch of Squeaky Bean’s Roast Chicken Style Slices, vegetarians and plant-based diners no longer need to miss out on these much-loved sandwich combinations, while flexitarians looking to reduce their meat intake – whether for health, environment or animal welfare concerns – can opt for a realistic alternative to chicken products.
Consumers can shake up their sandwiches in a variety of ways, including by trying the club sandwich recipe featured below.

Sarah Augustine, Squeaky Bean co-creator, says: “Squeaky Bean is your sidekick in the kitchen, with these wonderfully versatile and flavourful Roast Chicken Flavour Slices that are sure to challenge negative perceptions of vegan food. Adding a deliciously moreish filling to sandwiches has never been easier – that’s if you can resist eating the Slices straight from the pack!”

Squeaky Bean’s delicious range of simple-to-prepare products are helping to expand the vegan food market, which is experiencing a year-on-year value growth of 22% for meat-free ready to eat lines [Kantar WPO 52 w/e April 2020].

Each pack of Squeaky Bean plant-based Roast Chicken Slices weighs 90g and has a recommended retail price of £2.50.

THE JOBBER’S REST (UPMINSTER) // RESTAURANT REVIEW

A little while back we visited The Jobbers Rest, which is a cosy pub located in Upminster, not our usual turf, but well worth venturing out to. Naturally, before visiting, we’d had a glance of the menus & were seriously impressed, plus there were a couple of replies to Instagram stories saying how this was a fantastic place to go – we were very excited before we’d even set off.

So we were very kindly invited down by a lovely lady called Karen, who was also our host for the evening – she certainly knows her stuff! Karen kindly showed us around the pub, gave us a bit of insight behind the company, gave us plenty of recommendations, as well as introducing us to other staff members, a true credit to the business. The purpose of the visit was of course to sample the menu, & that is exactly what we did. We enjoyed some divine dishes, some very tempting cocktails & truly exceptional service.

Our scrumptious feast began with some very impressive starters, including;
– Loch Fyne salmon gravadlax, which was served alongside salmon pate, salmon caviar & a horseradish creme fraiche & dill pesto dressing. This dish was absolutely unreal!!! The salmon tasted so, so fresh & was so well complimented by the dressing… this could’ve been eaten about 3 times over, easy! Each ‘part’ of the dish worked so well, & what was nice about this starter too was that it was lovely & light, almost like you’d not eaten a starter at all (plenty of room for mains!)
The second starter was;
Cheese souffle – Another absolutely weapon of a starter! This looked the part too – a fun dish as well, as you got to pour in the cheese sauce, yum! The souffle was lovely & fluffy, & very quickly devoured. We would DEFINITELY order this again!

The starters set the bar very high for mains but we knew we wouldn’t be let down – with everything going so well, we knew we were onto a winner. Our mains arrived promptly, & looked absolutely incredible! We enjoyed;
– Slow cooked Beef Bourguignon – this was mouthwatering, to say the least. The presentation in itself was incredible, & the taste of it, indescribable. With each mouthful of the plate, you got different flavours bursting through, it was absolutely delicious. The meat was so tender, & literally fell to pieces when the fork touched it. By FAR one of the best cooked pieces of meat we’ve tried. The bed of mash was gorgeous too, super smooth & not too much of it to leave you feeling full & bloated. A beautiful, beautiful main. We can see this being a favourite during the winter!
– Jimmy Butler’s free range gammon steak, served with a duck egg & chips. So a slight twist on a pub classic – you can never go wrong with a gammon steak, & boy, was this a steak! The gammon was HUGE, very thick but tender throughout – cooked to perfection. The egg was cooked to perfection as well, with a rich runny yolk, perfect for dipping the chips into! Normally we would season our chips with salt & vinegar but these little beauties needed nothing – they did all of the work for themselves.
We also enjoyed a couple of sides with the mains which were;
– Dauphinoise potatoes
– Buttered green beans
Both of these were superb. The green beans were perfectly buttery, cooked just right & worked entirely with the bourguignon. The potatoes were another level – these were dreamy. The right dose of garlic, & not too creamy, the one side you NEED to order if you visit this pub!
We were so, so impressed with our mains, all of the plates were completely cleared, bar a few green beans – this says it all!

Despite clearing our plates, we sure as hell had room for desserts – how could we turn our noses up at a third course, when everything else had blown us out of the water?! We went for one of the customers’ favourites, which was recommended, the Pistachio souffle, & Chocolate fondant with spiced orange & passionfruit sauce… wow, wow, wow, WOW! The desserts were EVERYTHING. The souffle in itself was a beast (in a good way of course) & the chocolate fondant was spot on. The souffle was deliciously sweet, & worked perfectly alongside the chocolate ice cream which it was served with, & the fondant was so rich & intense, but nicely broken up with the citrus fruit flavours. To be totally honest, we probably could’ve eaten the entire dessert menu – everything on there is amazing. Different, but things you know will work. Alongside our desserts, we also enjoyed a couple of cocktails, Karen had these made for us as a bit of a surprise, so we had two of the favourites which were the Amaretto Sour & everyones favourite, Pornstar Martini. These were of course sumptuous, (as well as dangerous!) We could’ve easily kept knocking these back, they were doubtlessly delightful.

We were totally astounded with our visit to The Jobbers Rest, truth be told, it wasn’t somewhere we’d heard of before, but we are really glad to have discovered such a beautiful restaurant with such an exquisite menu. We will certainly visit again, there’s just so much on the menu that we’d like to try, & we’ve also heard their Sunday roast is pretty top notch too. Not only is the food good, the level & quality of service we received was what you’d expect to receive in a premium restaurant (where you’re spending hundreds!) Every member of staff we spoke to went the extra mile for us, & nothing was too much. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at The Jobbers Rest, & of course the wonderful Karen for making this all happen! We are counting the days down til our next visit!

It’s also worth noting that for the PUP-LOVERS, this place is also dog-friendly. If the review wasn’t a reason enough to visit, they even have their own pups too!! Get yourself booked in ASAP!

LAURA’S CAKERY // TREAT BOX REVIEW

Click here to visit Laura’s page.

A couple of weekends back I received what I could only describe as the most SCRUMPTIOUS of deliveries. The very lovely Laura of @laurascakery very kindly dropped off a ‘treat box’ to me after a busy day at a farmer’s market.
The box was made up of 4 different treats, all very traditional, but with such modern twists. Up on offer, there was…
– Jammie Dodger Rocky Road
– Freddo Cookie Dough Slice
– Millionaires Rice Krispy Treat
– Cornflake Brownie
As you can tell just by their names, they’re a bit of an edgier take on the classics.
Every single thing was spot on – from their presentation, down to the last yummy crumbs, they just hit the spottttt! My favourite of them all was definitely the Jammie Dodger Rocky Road, the taste of this was just INCREDIBLE! I was also convinced that I could taste party rings in this but it turns out it was in fact iced gems! I loved this one the most simply because it looked MEGA, I can only imagine just how good this looks when it’s freshly made & ready to be sliced up! & also, it was soooo YUMMY! I love anything with white chocolate, & this was a fantastic way of mixing up the typical rocky road, it also meant that the treat wasn’t too sickly either, as white chocolate (I find) is nowhere near as rich as milk, in fact I probably could’ve worked my way through about 4 slices!!
The Freddo Cookie Dough slice was by far the cutest looking of all the treats (just look at his lil’ face!) The chocolate on this was indulgent & thick, & the Freddo DEFO too cute to cut through! (… I had to cut this one up because the cookie dough was very rich, & there was no way I was getting through a slice of this all by myself!) In hindsight, I think I should’ve maybe warmed this up to get the full cookie dough effect, nevertheless it was still delish! This one I know has also been a hit/is very popular as many of you replied to my story saying how adorable this looks.
The Millionaires Rice Krispie Treat… I LOVED the idea of this. Millionaires shortbread is amazing, don’t get me wrong but sometimes it can be slightly too much/too rich, so what a way to break it up, using Rice Krispies. You defo get the snap, crackle & POP with this, oozing with marshmallowy goodness. I would 100% recommend giving this a try, (not as rich = you can eat more!!)
Aaand finallyyyyy… the Cornflake Brownie! This one was a straight up banger! I love a cornflake cake as it is, & I would’ve been more than happy just munching through the cornflake part on its own, but there was a decadent layer of chocolate brownie base & it was PHENOMENAL! The brownie was made just right, not too squidgy but not too tough, & just completed the treat perfectly!
All of the treats were an absolute delight to sample & I cannot wait to try out Laura’s other goodies!! (check her page/highlights just to see what other creations she’s come up with – you’ll be impressed, trust me!)
A huge thank you to @laurascakery – cannot wait to see what you’ll come up with next! [GIFTED]

POSITIVE PARCEL // PRODUCT REVIEW

I’ve recently had the pleasure of receiving a gorgeous & very heartwarming box from none other than Positive Parcel. As the name clearly suggests, they exist to spread little boxes of positivity. The perfect pick me up for yourself, or just a little reminder to someone close that you’re thinking of them, or simply sending them a little smile. The box is made up of some yummy treats, these include 2 homemade chocolates from Positive Parcel (white chocolate, which is delicious), plus some Happy Tea from Teapigs. Receiving this actually allowed me to try Teapigs for the first time & I was v impressed! A subtle lemon tea that can lift your mood. The other bits in the box are sadly not edible, all very lovely nonetheless. The other items include a Relax Candle (this smelt absolutely amazing, I could smell it as soon as I’d unwrapped the post packaging, not the box!!), The Happy Newspaper, which features plenty of happy & uplifting news, Sticky Notes, (because when are sticky notes not useful?!) & a very calming colouring in sheet. I absolutely loved receiving my Positive Parcel, & it brought a genuine smile to my face. Help spread the joy & send a parcel yourself, at £17.99 with 10% of profits go to mental health charity Mind, too.
Thank you very much to @positive_parcel for bringing a smile straight to my doorstep 🙂 [GIFTED]

DIRTY MARTINI (BIRMINGHAM) // BRUNCH REVIEW

Brunches are proving more popular than ever so I thought with this, I’d post something a little different as I went to one a little while back. So I visited Birmingham for the weekend and decided to go for a brunch at none other than Dirty Martini. Not strictly Essex, I know but there are branches in London which is not too far away from us, which all offer the same deal. The brunch itself was very reasonably priced at £30 per person for 90 minutes of unlimited drinks & a platter of food. There are two options for food, a meat option or a vegetarian option. The meat option consisting of; beef & cheese sliders, crispy tomato & basil arancini, paprika spiced crispy tortillas, skin on fries with rosemary salt, vegetable spring rolls, chicken hirata buns, chorizo & yellow pepper kebabs, & the veggie option consisting of; crispy tomato & basil arancini, korean vegetable samosas, paprika spiced tortillas, skin on fries with rosemary salt, vegetable spring rolls, Quorn & vegetable hirata buns, tomato & yellow pepper kebabs. Now I know that when you go for a brunch, you’re not necessarily focused on the food, you are there for the delicious cocktails but truth be told, the food was totally disappointing! We found that the hirata buns & the beef & cheese sliders totally lacked in flavour, & were served up really quite dry/stale. We did really enjoy the chorizo & yellow pepper kebabs, they were really tasty, & the arancini was lovely too but everything else was just sort of alright. The drinks were a completely different story – tasty & we couldn’t get enough of them! You can take advantage of unlimited Passion Fruit, Espresso, or French Martinis, Prosecco, Pravha (beer), Beefeater Blood Orange or Beefeater Pink Gin & Tonic (well worth the £30 just for the drinks – the reason I made the booking in the first place!) As I say, the brunch is worth booking purely for drinks alone as cocktails end up costing around a tenner anyway, so it’s a bit of a no brainer, however if you do book, don’t expect too much from the food!

Nationwide tea drinking survey reveals younger consumers coming back to tea during lockdown

Thanks to Jungle Cat Solutions for the following content

OUR LOCKDOWN LOVE AFFAIR WITH TEA IS HERE TO STAY

Nationwide tea-drinking survey reveals younger consumers coming back to tea due to hydration benefits and feel-good factor

A new independent survey of more than 2000 adults across the UK, commissioned by the UKTIA (the UK Tea and Infusions Association) – the authority on tea – has found that younger adults have rediscovered their love of tea during lockdown [1].

In-between juggling Zoom calls, remote working, online shopping and homeschooling, four in ten of 18-34-year olds are more likely to brew a warming mug of tea than before lockdown. And more than nine in ten say their tea-drinking habits are here to stay or will even increase in the future.

Overall, 86 per cent of adults are now tea drinkers – a rise of nine percentage points since a major government survey in 2000[2]. This equates to an extra 1 million tea drinkers[3]. Around half (53 per cent) are drinking tea daily, rising to more than 60 per cent in the over 55s.

Commenting on the survey, Dr Sharon Hall from the UKTIA said: “Everyone knows that wonderful ‘ah’ feeling of sitting down with a mug of tea, especially when you’ve had a busy or stressful day.

“This is probably why more than half of those responding to the survey (53 per cent) cited the ‘feel good’ factor as a reason for upping their tea intake. This was followed by hydration and the opportunity to socialise with family and friends, even if these days that means sharing a cuppa during a virtual chat.

“Lockdown has been hard for most of us – working alone at home and separated from loved ones, or dealing with boisterous children. Having a tea break has been one way for us to take a break in the confines of our own homes.

“Interestingly, younger consumers in their twenties and thirties are being more adventurous with their tea choices. Around four in ten tried new teas during lockdown – including herbal infusions for immunity, teas with added vitamins and different flavours of teas.

“In contrast, consumers aged 45 years plus are more likely to stick to family favourites – such as regular black tea – as nine out of ten said they were happy with their usual brew.

“With fewer opportunities to get out to cafes and restaurants, the lockdown was definitely the time for us to rediscover our love of tea – and it’s great that most people plan to stick with their new tea habit”.

Dr Sharon Hall’s top tips for the perfect cup of tea:
1. Always fill the kettle with fresh water each time you make a brew. This is because boiling for too long removes oxygen from the water and affects the taste.
2. Only boil the amount of water you need; this helps save energy
3. Just boiled water should be used for black tea. Green tea needs a slightly cooler temperature to bring out its best flavour, so wait a couple of minutes before you brew. Always read the instructions on the pack.
4. The hot water “energises” the leaf and extracts all the character the tea. Brewing time is a matter of taste, but you should allow your tea to brew for up to 3 minutes if you want to max out on the health-promoting polyphenol compounds found naturally in tea.
5. Brewing tea from a bag in a mug? Milk in last is best. That’s to maintain the optimal brewing temperature.

AWFULLY POSH LOMO CRISPS // PRODUCT REVIEW

Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to receive a box of very posh & very fancy Lomo Crisps from Awfully Posh. At first glance, these crisps look very funky, almost a ray of sunshine with their fantastically bright packaging, as for the crisps themselves, well, they’re certainly not your average looking crisp!
As expected, these crisps were very posh indeed. Made from Spanish Pork Loin (one of the finest, if not the finest, cuts of pork), the crisps are cured with a blend of paprika & garlic to really bring out the flavour of the meat, then finally thinly sliced & air dried ready for consumption! The crisps are also high in protein, yet low in carbs (HOORAH!), & are Keto/Atkins diet-friendly, making them perfect for an afternoon snack, or a post-gym treat. What more could you ask for from a crisp I ask you?!

I loved these ‘crisps’, I am a tapas-fiend & these little bites of goodness oozed a gorgeous, summery, tapas-y vibe. Truly flavoursome, they are perfect served alongside some fresh olives & manchego (a jug of sangria wouldn’t go amiss either!) Personally, I wouldn’t reach for these as a crisp-y snack, over a bag of crisps over lunch, just my personal preference as I didn’t find them very filling, but I would hands-down serve up for perhaps a tapas themed dinner, or even as a picnic snack in the summer months. They are certainly something very different, & well worth trying, especially if you’re a fan of parma/Iberian hams.

Now, as these crisps are exceptionally posh, they will set you back £23.99 for a box of ten, HOWEVER, they will provide you with a taste of Spain, & in comparison to the price of a plane ticket, this is nothing, & you won’t have to quarantine after eating these either! There’s also a chance to BAG YOURSELF A BOX of these babies as I’ve paired up with Awfully Posh to bring one of you the chance of winning a box, simply check out my previous post on Instagram on Awfully Posh & get yourself entered.

Crisps can be brought directly from https://www.britishsnackco.com/store/product/lomo-crisps-10-x-25g/. & don’t forget, The Awfully Posh range also includes Pork Puffs, Pork Scratchings and Pork Crackling. All of which are awfully posh of course!

  4. Assemble your ‘chicken’ club sandwich! Start with a layer of sauce, add on the avocado and top with the vegan cheese slice. To get your cheese extra melty, place it under the grill in your oven for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Place the sliced tomato onto the cheese, add a little more of the sauce, then top with a generous serving of the Squeaky Bean Roast Chicken Flavour Slices. Spread tomato ketchup onto the top slice, add the cooked ham slice, the red onion & finish off with the lettuce leaves. Spread the remainder of the ‘honey’ mustard sauce onto the second slice before placing it on top.
  6. Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy!

SOCIAL STORIES CLUB // CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN

Thank you to Social Stories Club for the following content

Social Stories Club Christmas Campaign ‘Christmas with an Impact’.
Gift-boxes That Support Social Enterprises and Create the Ultimate Social Impact.

Social Stories Club, a socially impactful gift-box social enterprise has decided to make this Christmas as socially conscious as possible, they have curated a campaign to have ‘Christmas with an Impact’. Social Stories Club have been shining a light on social enterprises and their incredible
stories of impact for two years, through their exciting gifts supporting lots of social causes such as creating social mobility for the Dalit community of India, supporting reforestation, and providing education for girls. This Christmas they are asking the UK public to buy a socially impactful gift and make this Christmas as Impactful as possible.

Victoria E, a buyer and receiver of a Social Stories Club gift-box wrote: “I received one of these hampers recently, and loved it! I had to then in turn get one as a gift for my friend for her birthday. It’s such a treat! What a brilliant initiative, supporting brilliant companies with great visions for making a positive impact. What’s not to love?!” These positive statements are what empowers the small Social Stories Club team to keep finding new and inspiring social enterprises and to promote the creation of social impact. Since Social Stories Club was created they have created over £30,000 in positive impact across the world.

Karis Gill – Co-Founder, Social Stories Club; has over the past couple of months realised that the
public is thinking more about the types of businesses they support and how they spend their
money, during difficult societal and financial periods. During COVID-19, there was a push to
support local businesses, especially ones with a more socially conscious focus. Karis created the very popular‘ A Hug-in-a-Box’ gift box in May to ensure people still felt connected in the difficult months. As it has become more unstable towards the festive period Social Stories Club has
reaffirmed their commitment to not only creating social impact, but making social groups still feel connected.

In September, Social Stories Club launched a successful crowd-funder campaign raising £4000 with gift boxes filled with products from small social enterprises. They created this after they realised they can struggle to produce mass orders over busy periods; therefore, they created a pre-
order scheme for September to ensure they were supported and had enough production time for the festive period.

Social Stories Club are not only shining a light on these amazing brands, they are also providing a route to market for social enterprises. The social enterprises they feature are shared on their social media and also their stories are told in the story booklets included in our boxes. Many of
those featured have gone on to receive large orders from corporates and other businesses.

About Social Stories Club.
Karis came up with the idea for Social Stories Club on her 21st birthday. She knew at this point that she wanted to combine her interests in entrepreneurship and charity, and social enterprise was the answer. Karis led the events team of her local Social Enterprise Club and became
fascinated with all the social enterprises she met and their incredible stories of impact. Karis was so inspired by these stories she wanted to share them with the world. When Karis came back to Edinburgh for her final year of university, she dedicated her dissertation to researching social
enterprise. Aayush, who is the other co-founder, grew up in India and his first flight out of Asia landed him in Edinburgh to start university. Aayush’s background is in finance, charity and operations. In his first year at university between 2014-15, Aayush raised over £11,000 for four different
charities. To encourage university students to get involved, he designed several creative events to raise funds including pillow fights for mental health. In August 2019, Aayush was shortlisted as the ‘Social Enterprise Champion ’by Social Enterprise Scotland. In their 4th year at university Karis sat in Aayush’s kitchen and they discussed their future. Aayush was struggling applying for graduate jobs and Karis had her plan for Social Stories Club. The conversation was short and beautiful Karis asked Aayush if he wanted to join and immediately he said yes.

NUDIE SNACKS // PRESS RELEASE

Thank you to Nudie Snacks for the following content

Groundbreaking brand Nudie Snacks has harnessed the plant power in wonky veg and is the first to market a new product made from fresh produce that would usually have been discarded.

The Caulifower Crisps are made from 40% fresh cauliflower grown in Scotland and come in two different flavours – cheese and caramelised onion and katsu curry. They offer bold and innovative flavours with a broad appeal to all ages and tastes.

The Ayrshire brand says the crisps are in line with its ethos of producing quality plant-based snacks that are a healthier alternative.

With no artificial flavourings or colourings, the Cauliflower Crisps are low in sugar, high in fibre and 40% lower in saturated fat than traditional potato crisps, making a healthier snacking option. Importantly, they are cutting food waste as the crisps are made from vegetables often thrown out because they don’t meet standard shape and size requirements.

“We wanted to find a way to use all the wonky cauliflowers that shops think they can’t or shouldn’t be selling and making them into a snack we’re proud of,” said Tracey Hogarth, founder of Nudie Snacks.

“We are the first to market this product – it’s the perfect snack and doesn’t compromise on taste or quality.

“With the health risks associated with diabetes, obesity and coronavirus, it has never been a more important time to keep your immune system and gut health in good condition. Eating pulses is better for you, keeps you fuller for longer and prevents you reaching for high-fat, high-sugar snacks.”

A 22gm bag of Cauliflower Crisps has 118 calories and is perfect for adults and children, in packed lunch boxes, to nibble on during the day or in the evening.

Suitable for those following vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free diets, the crisps are part of a new range by Nudie Snacks that includes Lentil Curls flavoured with Chilli and lime, Quinoa Chips with Sundried Tomato and Garlic, Lightly Salted Roasted Corn, Lightly Salted Hummus Chips and Popcorn.

The new range is available to buy from https://www.nudiesnacks.co.uk/

Prices from £9.99 for a box of 12 packs of Cauliflower Crisps, delivered straight to your door.

Naturally Fast Food chain LEON is launching the Better Burgers Campaign, rallying the hospitality industry to improve the nutrition and sourcing of fast food.

The campaign brings to life LEON’s mission to serve naturally fast food that not only tastes good but does good too, with a menu featuring local and responsibly sourced seasonal ingredients. The announcement comes at a time when consumers are challenging restaurants to behave with more transparency and clarity on the nutritional value of their menus.

The Better Burgers Campaign kicks off with the launch of LEON’s new Burger Meal Deal (any burger)1, regular Baked Fries and a no-added-sugar natural fruit juice sparkling can; £8.95) and the new Crispy Chicken Korean Burger. This good-for-your-gut burger is made with raw, fermented kimchi, LEON’s best-selling GFC higher-welfare British chicken nuggets and a zingy Korean mayo.

Each of LEON’s Burgers is truly ‘better’: from the delicious Chargrilled Chicken Burger made with 100% British chicken thigh, which has double the protein of a McDonald’s McChicken Sandwich and more protein than any of KFC’s Chicken Burgers, to the Fish Finger Burger made with MSC fish from sustainable shoals which beats McDonald’s equivalent, Filet-o-Fish.

LEON believes in the power of plants and has increased the number of plant-based dishes on its menu, with a focus always on flavour helping guests to both eat well and look after the planet. In fact, sales of plant-based burgers now equal the number of meat-based burgers2 which couldn’t make the team at LEON happier.

Continuing to innovate in plant-based dishes, LEON is also launching a new Vegan Tagine with Jackfruit & Chickpeas (£4.95) and Sweetcorn Ribs with Parmesan & Truffle (£3.45), welcoming the return of the Brazilian Black Beans (£3.95), and larger Vegan Cheezy Loaded Fries, now topped with hot jalapeños (£3.95).

Continuing its commitment to seasonality, the Grilled Aubergine and Paprika Chicken Plant Boxes have been updated to feature the best of British autumnal roasted veg.

Erica Molyneaux, Head of Food at LEON, said: “It is our mission to continue to give our guests food that tastes good, does good and is kind to the planet. It is time for other restaurant brands to join us in the Better Burgers Campaign and rally for the improvement of food sourcing and nutrition within the fast food industry.

“We’re excited to be launching a new responsibly-sourced burger and a range of vegan sides which continues to show our ongoing commitment to providing innovative, affordable and good-for-your-gut fast food.”

The new menu is available across all LEON restaurants from Thursday 8th October 2020.

JAVA WHISKERS CAT CAFE // PRESS RELEASE

Thank you to Chalmers New PR for the following content

Purrrfect timing for cat café after initial plans ‘paws-ed’ by pandemic

CATS will soon be the talk of London’s West End again – but Andrew Lloyd
Webber will be playing no part in its success. Java Whiskers cat café is set to make its debut on October 31st, six months after its original launch plans had to be shelved due to the pandemic.

Occupying former offices in Great Portland Street, Fitzrovia Marylebone, the venue will entice cat lovers with its winning formula of food and feline
‘therapy,’ something the owners say is needed more than ever.
Behind the concept are three friends from southern Sweden who enjoyed huge success with the launch of their country’s first ever cat café last year.
Self-confessed ‘entrepreneurs with big hearts,’ Jon Bäcklund, Tobias Larsson and Joakim Wessman are also the team behind successful Swedish trampoline park chain Yoump. Tobias Larsson said: “We wanted to find a business that is doing something good. We want to create a great environment for both the cats and humans that is calm and comfortable but also very healing. The café has two primary objectives: to improve the mental health and wellbeing of its visitors and to reduce the rate of cat homelessness. It’s been very challenging due to the unpredictability the pandemic has brought upon us and the public. However, these challenges have made us more determined to stick to our original plans and open our café to offer a bit of positivity to London in the midst of the crisis. We do feel our unique concept of service will be of even greater importance
now. The holistic mental wellbeing benefits of spending time with cats has
been widely documented. So we are delighted we can offer this service to our guests very soon. And we’ve gone above and beyond to make our café COVID-friendly and taken every possible safety measure to give you that peace of mind when you visit us!”

Java Whiskers will foster a maximum of nine kitties at any one time from The Scratching Post Cat Rescue shelter, in Waltham Abbey, until suitable new forever homes can be found among its customers. The purpose-built cattery, in Enfield, has been a labour of love for Susan Delaney for 15 years.
Susan said she saw this as a new opportunity to help tackle the growing
number of unwanted cats in and around London. She added: “I thought it a fantastic idea and it is definitely the first time we will have worked with a cat café and thought it was such a wonderful opportunity to move the charity forward by rehoming to people who will see the cats’ personalities and fall in love. This will help us, as a charity move forward and rescue more cats. There is an ever- growing population of unwanted cats in and around London, so this will help towards the volume of reports we receive.”
The Scratching Post can be contacted at: http://www.scratchingpost.co.uk

Tobias said: “We are very happy and proud of the difference we have made for homeless cats in Sweden and also how much our visitors love our concept so we are super excited to be opening in the UK now.”
Customers to Java Whiskers will be asked to book a time slot ahead of their
visit. The café design includes elevated shelves and walkways as well as plenty of ‘escape spaces’ for the animals. And the cats’ welfare is paramount with a set of important guest rules, including no running, keeping noise to a low level and no picking up the resident kitties, feeding them or waking them when they’re asleep. Children under 10 will not be permitted and it’s strictly shoes off and hands washed upon entering.
The top level of the two-storey 2,000 sq ft unit will be dedicated to providing a premium customer experience, including a menu of hot and cold drinks,
sandwiches, pastries and salads, while downstairs the cats are afforded plenty of private space.
It’s the first of a series of cat cafés being launched in the UK by the
entrepreneurs who are already eyeing up plans for more in the future.

T’S FRIED SCOOP // NEW BUSINESS

Thank you to Goho Ltd for the following content

London’s Newest Dessert Trend Has Arrived in Shoreditch

● T’s Fried Scoop, fried ice cream desserts, arrived in Brick Lane, East London on 25th July
● The dessert craze is unlike anything tasted before in the UK
● T’s Fried Scoop is fried ice cream, inspired by a blend of Mexican and Japanese desserts

On Saturday 25th July, the UK’s newest dessert craze arrived to the Truman Brewery Upmarket, Shoreditch. (91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL)
The dessert trend is fried ice cream but it’s unlike anything England has ever seen before. The ice cream is inspired by a blend of Mexican and Japanese desserts. The ‘fried scoop’ is a combination of hot and cold desserts in one. The deep fried ice cream has an outer cookie-dough shell that is rolled in breadcrumbs that form a crispy layer but can also be covered in either cornflakes or Oreos. The founder describes it as “a hot, fried crust, coated in breadcrumbs, cornflakes or Oreos, wrapped around a decadent ice cream”.

The fried ice cream enthusiast and founder, Natasha, commented, “When I first tried fried ice cream, I was amazed! It was unlike anything I’d had before. I became so obsessed that I began practising and practising, using lots of methods from various cultures. This is why T’s Fried Scoop is so unique, because we’re a blend of so many different methods!”
The dessert maker is committed to making sure their desserts are inclusive, which is why T’s Fried Scoop has plenty of options, with their Matcha Ice cream being Vegan, and some toppings being Gluten free, there is something for everyone. The desserts are entirely vegetarian and
kosher, and Natasha is busy working on an entirely Vegan and Gluten free menu.

T’s Fried Scoop T’s Fried Scoop are located in the Truman Brewery Upmarket every Saturday from 11am-6pm and every Sunday from 10am-6pm. The fried ice cream is inspired by similar South Indian, Mexican and Japanese desserts but this is a totally unique recipe, and experience.

TWELVE BURGER & BEER (SOUTHEND) // RESTAURANT REVIEW

A few weeks back, we visited Southend’s latest burger restaurant Twelve Burger & Beer. (Please bear in mind, the latest Covid restrictions were not in place when we made our visit). The restaurant itself is located in the heart of Southend, making it ideal to stop off for a snack if you’re out shopping, or perhaps a cocktail or two after getting off the train from work. We visited on a rainy Thursday evening, & enjoyed some yummy food! Sadly no alcoholic drinks for us (other than a small glass of prosecco on arrival – which was a really lovely touch), as we were driving. The restaurant runs a fantastic offer of 241 on ALL alcoholic beverages between 5 & 7pm, so it really is the place to pick up a couple of drinks. We saw several cocktails carried through the restaurant during our visit, & they all looked fab. We were gutted we couldn’t try some! We did however indulge in some fantastic food – we each upgraded our burgers to a ‘meal’ so as well as the burger, you get chips & a drink included in the price. Our burgers of choice were…
– Bacon Cheese Burger. This was delicious! The caramelised onions were what totally made this burger, it added a huge depth of flavour. I wish I’d gone for the double tbh! However, saying this, the burger itself was very big & I did need cutlery to make my way through it, or else it’d have slipped straight out the bun. This would definitely be ordered again!
– The Twelve Chicken Burger. Another delicious burger! The chicken on this was lovely & tender, with it being chicken thigh rather than fillet. This was quite nice to see actually, as most places will use chicken breast, but thigh is much more juicier – this was very welcomed. The only little tweak that we would probably make to this burger would be using mayo, as we much prefer mayo in a chicken burger. The sauce in this was almost like a raita, which was nice, but just not to our preference.
The burger menu itself wasn’t too extensive which we think is a GOOD thing – too much to choose from can be overwhelming, & with a smaller menu, this allows the restaurant to really perfect what they have on offer.
Each meal came with a portion of chips which were lovely – these didn’t need seasoning at all, & were wolfed up! Following our meals, one of us enjoyed a gorgeous vanilla milkshake – this was SOOOO yummy! It wasn’t thick, as we expected it to be, however, you should not let this deceive you! This milkshake was absolutely bangin’! All of the food was really nice & we enjoyed our visit here, just a couple of little bits that we think could’ve been improved – our meals didn’t come out at the same time, which meant one of us had to wait for the other, just a little timing issue, & secondly, we found the music a little too loud over dinner – we are all for music, but we would’ve probably preferred this if we were having a drink!
Thank you very much to @ for having us – we look forward to popping in again! [GIFTED]

WILEY’S FINEST CATCH FREE OMEGA // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to JellyRock PR & Marketing for the following.

Wiley’s Finest launches CatchFree Omega – the “vegan fish oil” you can cook with

CatchFree.jpg

A major step forward in health CatchFree Omega – Full spectrum Omega-3 Liquid is the first health supplement in the world that not only offers vegans and vegetarians their daily dose of Omega-3s and vitamin D from plant-based sources, but can also be used as an ingredient to create delicious meals such as desserts, smoothies and salads.

Omega-3s are crucial for the brain, heart, eye, and reproductive health. They optimise our brain function; improving focus, IQ and memory. They also have anti-inflammatory effects and have been shown to reduce the chance of dementia. Yet studies show most of the UK population, and especially vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians are commonly deficient in Omega-3s.

CatchFree Omega – Full spectrum Omega-3 Liquid and soft gel capsules are made from a blend of branded British-grown Ahiflower seed oil, Algarithm DHA derived from marine algae and the addition of MenaQ7 and Vitashine vitamin D3.

Naturally wild and now agriculturally grown, British Ahiflower contains a full spectrum of healthy fats such as ALA Omega-3, SDA Omega-3, and GLA Omega-6 fatty acids. Each bloom of the Ahiflower produces up to four seeds which are then pressed to produce an Omega-rich healthy oil with a higher quality and quantity of Omegas than any other seed oil ever produced.

DHA table-page-001.jpg

The light Tropical Mango flavouring of CatchFree Omega – Full spectrum Omega-3 Liquid makes it truly unique in that consumers can conveniently cook with it.

Vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians are commonly deficient in the essential nutrient, omega-3. DHA omega-3 is crucial for brain, heart, eye, and reproductive health. Doctors recommend consuming 250-500 mg per day. Even vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy foods, their intake is, on average, only 20 mg DHA per day compared to the suggested. A large population study in vegetarians reported that more than half of the subjects consumed no DHA at all.

Wiley’s Finest has continued to expand beyond wild Alaskan fish oils by launching other plant-based products such as Bold Heart, a useful and natural way to manage cholesterol in a convenient, mixable sachet serving for heart health on-the-go.

Sam Wiley, Wiley’s Finest CEO says: “”From day one, Wiley’s Finest was always designed to offer more than ‘just’ exceptional quality fish oil. We are passionate about the essential fatty acid category, and about our mission to serve the health and nutrition needs of all consumers. We recognise there are millions around the world who choose not to eat animal products, and our commitment to serve the health of everyone on the planet has just taken a major step forward.”

About Wiley’s Finest™
Wiley’s Finest™ point of difference is clear. A new generation of fish oil users has emerged – people who see fish oil not just as a generic ‘Omega-3’ supplement, but as seafood. People who demand a product to not only feature a high-concentration of EPA & DHA or science-driven formulas, but are traceable and sustainable. The company has taken off like a rocket, becoming the natural health food channel’s fastest growing fish oil brand and a preferred choice by many of the nation’s leading independent health food stores.

Although the Wiley’s Finest™ brand is relatively new, its family’s roots go deep in manufacturing and distillation of high purity ingredients. Brothers Sam and Daniel are third generation in the business; working with their father David and uncle Paul every day. They are proud that the family has been manufacturing since 1981 — that’s over 35 years of excellence in fine distillation.

What are Omega-3s?

Gretchen Vannice has a Master’s in Nutrition Science and is a registered dietitian nutritionist, specializing in omega-3 research. She is also author of Making Sense of Omega-3s: The Good Fats. She specialises in omega-3 research and natural health. She says:

“Both omega-3s and omega-6s are required fats in human health. They’re called essential fats because we need them but our bodies can’t make them; instead, we must consume them through diet and supplements. Most of us get plenty of omega-6s but fall short of enough omega-3s.

“Omega-3s are among the most researched nutrients. Different forms and sources of omega-3s exist (see Table) and they work differently in the body. For example, ALA and SDA omega-3s found in plant oils work differently from EPA and DHA omega-3s found in algae (vegan) and fish oils. What’s more, while all omega-3s have health benefits, research shows that some give more targeted benefits in our bodies.

“The omega-3s EPA and DHA support life-sustaining functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and muscle and nerve contractions.  Everyone needs EPA and DHA for a healthy body, and higher levels of omega-3 (measured as the Omega-3 Index) support optimum health. An Omega-3 Index of 8% or higher improves the health of your brain, heart, eyes, joints; it increases longevity and supports overall health and wellness.

“ALA and SDA are also healthy fats; they are great sources of energy and support general metabolic wellness. Supplementing with SDA and vegan DHA omega-3s effectively increases the Omega-3 Index.1,[1] Both ALA and SDA can convert to EPA in our bodies; the added benefit of SDA is that the body turns SDA into EPA far more efficiently than ALA does from flax seeds.[2],[3],[4],[5] Research shows that consuming vegan DHA increases DHA levels, while consuming ALA will not.[6],[7],13

“All of us, from vegan to omnivore, need DHA omega-3 for optimal health as it is crucial for brain, heart, eye, and reproductive health. The majority of us don’t meet our omega-3 needs unless we eat fish or take fish oil. This is especially true for vegans, vegetarians, lacto-ova vegetarians, and flexitarians. Many vegans and vegetarians consume little or no DHA omega-3. Even among vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy foods, their intake is, on average, only 20 mg DHA per day[8] compared to the suggested 250-500 mg per day. Indeed, a large population study in vegetarians reported that more than half of the subjects consumed no DHA at all.[9] Vegan athletes tend to be very low in omega-3s. Given the documented need for DHA and the lack of DHA in plant-focused diets, consuming DHA directly is highly recommended.”

Vannice also states that vegans and vegetarians alsohave significantly lower intake of vitamin D. The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) recommends at least 10 mcg vitamin D per day, but a UK population study reported the average intake of vitamin D among vegetarians was 1.5 mcg per day, and even lower in vegans, who consume less than 1 mcg of vitamin D per day while.[10],[11] Vitamin D is needed to support strong and reliant bones, a healthy immune system, and muscle metabolism; and because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, it is best taken with fat. Supplementing with at least 25 mcg per day is recommended to increase vitamin D levels.12,13

PURE OATY // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to Rawlingson Lane for the following content

Family owned, Family run, British manufacturer –
Gluten Free oat milk for ethical consumers

With many consumers now actively investigating not only how products are made, but increasingly, who owns the brand themselves, the focus on family owned, family run companies has never been greater. Glebe Farm Foods has been in the Rayner family for over 50 years, and is currently run by sister and brother Rebecca and Phil. This year, heavy investment by the
family itself has seen the creation of a purpose-built gluten free oat milk plant, located on the same farm at which the oats themselves are grown. This plant has been the catalyst for the launch of PureOaty, the only oat drink on the market that is produced using exclusively British gluten free oats.

Lovingly created in the UK using just 4 natural ingredients: British
gluten free oats, water, sunflower oil and salt, PureOaty contains no
added sugars, sweeteners or preservatives and never, ever comes from
concentrate (unlike many similar products).

Low in sugar and calories, PureOaty is an excellent milk alternative in
delicious barista style coffees, whilst being perfect on cereals, or in
smoothies. In addition, it excels as the base for many sauces, soups and
desserts or as a key ingredient in baking, from gluten free brownies to delicious cakes and bakes.

When steamed through a domestic coffee machine, PureOaty creates a luxurious, velvety barista style foam which is ideal for a morning cappuccino, mid-afternoon latte or an indulgent hot chocolate.

Following the huge demand for plant-based milks in 2020, PureOaty provides a fantastic gluten and dairy-free option for those who are integrating free-from products into their daily lifestyle in 2020.

Suitable for both vegetarians and vegans alike, PureOaty also offers an excellent plant-based option for consumers with a number of dietary requirements including lactose intolerance, coeliac disease and nut allergies.

The Rayner family is delighted with the initial launch of this gluten free oat milk option and are already receiving a great response from consumers following a dairy free diet, as well as those who are choosing it as a lifestyle option.

PureOaty is currently stocked in Holland & Barrett, Central England Co-Op’s and Amazon an retails for around £1.99.

LET’S TALK ABOUT… GUTS!

Thank you to James Barley Publicist for the following content

TRUST YOUR GUT (HEALTH!)

Health and Fitness Editor, Lucy Gornall, discusses her tips and tricks to maintain a healthy gut.

  • 84% of Brits do not consider their immune system to be a strong defender of illness
  • Only 19% of Brits are very aware of the term ‘gut health’
  • 1 in 5 Brits suffer often with constipation, indigestion (22%) and diarrhoea (18%)

It’s uncomfortable… it’s embarrassing… it’s a little awkward… and that’s just the conversation. Gut health, and speaking about it, can be both mortifying and interesting, and it’s ok to embrace both!

What we know about our health, whether that be what causes a migraine, or what gives us cramp, is different for every single person.

We’re all unique. We all have ups and downs, good and bad days (or thoughts, or feelings) but there are plenty of tips and tricks that can help us feel a little more stable… and at the very least, stable in our gut!

I recently discovered some new research from (my favourite) yoghurt brand, The Collective, who found that a huge 84% of us do not rate our immune system as being a strong defender or preventer of illness. In fact, 1 in 5 Brits suffer with constipation, indigestion (22%) and even diarrhoea (18%) more often than we’d like.

It’s shocking to me that so many of us are suffering in this way, and that stomach issues like these are becoming ‘normal’ and almost expected… There are countless aspects of life that we should be normalising, but an uncomfortable and sometimes painful gut, is not one of them!

The following thoughts are personal to me, BUT, what works for one can work for the many, so if you’re struggling with your gut health, don’t struggle alone. If you’re becoming used to being bloated, feeling sluggish, tired, and constantly uncomfortable then maybe I can help.

Limit Grazing.
When I snack a lot or just KEEP dipping my hand into the granola bag, I feel like my gut never gets a chance to rest and digest! So, I try to just eat my three meals, leave a nice lengthy gap between, and only snack if I’m hungry!

Exercise.
Always a winner – things just get moving! However, if I over exercise or go that bit too hard, then my stomach will bloat. So, it’s a fine line. Also, to note, when I swim or run I need to have waited at least 2 hours since I last ate.

Probiotics and fermented foods.
The Collective kefir range, along with sauerkraut and probiotics have done wonders for me. They help settle my tummy, support my immune system, and although some fermented foods can raise eyebrows when your friends take a peek in your fridge, they really are a game changer. If you’re not used to them though, go easy at first! Or the side effects will be a little… gassy!

Find the trigger foods
Some foods Just don’t agree with my tummy. Fried foods are the devil for me, as is cheese (however, some are ok). I’ve honestly spent years making notes and tracking how I feel after foods… but it’s worth noting that…

Stress plays a part.
I could eat ice cream when I’m stressed or trying to hit deadlines, and it will ruin my gut. Or I can eat it calmly in front of a film, and it won’t wreak such havoc. As soon as I’m stressed (this could be from an argument with someone, or missing a train or anything that makes me a bit on edge), I try to avoid eating as my tummy just isn’t in that ‘digest’ mode and instead, will simply bloat out! Stress really affects our immune systems, and it’s more important now (than ever before!) to keep ourselves healthy from the inside out.

Yoga.
For digestion! Ok, so when bloating or wind does build up, I go on YouTube, search for ‘digestive yoga’ and spend 5 minutes just… having a release. No shame here – we’ve all been in those uncomfortable situations!

Only 19% of us Brits are completely aware of the term ‘gut health’. To me, that’s shocking. What’s more, 59% of us don’t think that maintaining a healthy gut is very important at all. Come on, Britain!

I know how difficult and emotional confronting your gut can be. Our gut is where our true feelings lie – hence the term ‘gut feeling’ – so sometimes we don’t really want to stand up to that challenge. But please know that small changes, and they really can be as tiny as a swig of kefir, can have such a positive lasting effect.”

THE COPPER CREW – CANNED WINE // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to The Copper Crew for the following content

“The Copper Crew Launched in July 2020, The Copper Crew is a Cambridge based canned wine business, founded by three young friends – Theo Gough, Oli Purnell and Sam Lambson. Theo and Oli are Cambridge locals, while Sam is The Crew’s winemaker, based in South Africa. The name, The Copper Crew, comes from Theo and Oli’s ginger hair.

About us
We focus on sourcing and blending South African wines, specifically to be
canned. Our wines are selected and blended by Sam Lambson who recently completed a degree in oenology (the study of wine and wine making) at the University of Stellenbosch. While still at University Sam founded Minimalist Wines, launching his first wine to great acclaim in London (Stars in the Dark, 2018, Sryah, W.O. Elim). Sam’s success saw him completely sell out of his wine, signing an exclusive export deal, and being written up as one of Jancis Robinson’s unofficial wines of the week. While exhibiting for Minimalist in 2019, Theo and Sam first discussed the future
of young winemakers, changing consumer preferences and the importance of sustainable practices. Meanwhile, Oli had noticed the rise and popularity of canned wine whilst studying in the US. Together, we thought canned wine matched consumer preferences and could be successful in the UK as a more sustainable alternative to glass. Following conversations between all three of us on the business potential, feasibility and technical processes, we decided to make it a full-time venture. We left our jobs, started The Copper Crew from a kitchen table and have enjoyed every day since!

Our wines
Currently, we have two wines, a Rosé and Chenin Blanc, and will be launching a Merlot in October.

Wine details
The Copper Crew, 2019 Rosé, 13.5%
Appellation: W.O. Western Cape
A Provençal inspired blend based on Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah

The Copper Crew, 2019 Chenin Blanc, 13.5%
Appellation: W.O. Western Cape
Blend: 100% Chenin Blanc

Detailed tasting notes
The Copper Crew, 2019 Rosé, 13.5% – a blend of 5 Rhône cultivars; Syrah,
Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Viognier. Pale salmon in the glass, it has juicy aromas of ripe red cherry and plum, followed by a hint of baking spices (clove and cinnamon) and delicate floral undertones (violet). The wine is medium (-) in body, displays crisp acidity which lends freshness to the palate and resolves in an almost saline finish

The Copper Crew, 2019 Chenin Blanc, 13.5% – 100% Chenin Blanc and pale
gold in the glass. It has aromas of lemon meringue and passion fruit, lifted by citrus (orange, grapefruit), and melon notes. A textural wine- initially chalky, followed by a touch of leesy richness, cut by a zesty lemon/lime acidity. Richness gives way to zestiness, resulting in a long, pithy finish

Critic’s feedback
Jancis Robinson, FT wine critic, MW – “The Copper Crew have come up with
two nicely packaged 25cl cans of South African wine, both with quite marked acidity and light spritz, the rosé a bit drier-tasting than the Chenin Blanc. It has quite successfully been modelled on a Provençal pink from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah grapes. Both wines are blended by Sam Lambson, featured, indeed pictured, in this earlier article” -JancisRobinson.com

Emma Dawson, MW, Berkmann Wine Cellars Senior Buyer – “In aid of drinksouthafrican I decided to try this delightful ‘tinner’ by @coppercrewwines an honestly delightful & refreshing little tipple. The Chenin was just as good too”

Anne Jones, Waitrose Wine Category Manager, Wines, Beers and Sprits –
“The branding looks well-pitched […] The fruit on the rosé is very pretty and has enough concentration and elegance […] I did send on my feedback to the relevant buyer as I think there is real potential for these. Good work on the liquid”

Jacopo Mazzeo, Imbibe UK – on The Copper Crew’s Chenin Blanc “It shows a bit of reductive character at first, which then blows off to reveal light notes of lemon, pear, blossom and a touch of wild herbs. Refreshing, with just a hint of spritz to it”. On The Copper Crew’s Rosé “Very pale, it successfully resembles a light rosé from Provence, with delicate red berry fruit and some citrus flavours”

Why cans
We chose to use cans because of their lower environmental impact, convenience and moderation of serving size:
Aluminium cans are 100% recyclable, which means that unlike glass, they
can be recycled over and over again without losing any quality. 75% of all
aluminium cans ever made are still in circulation, and in the UK they can
be back on the shelf within 6 weeks after being recycled.
Cans are significantly more space efficient than bottles- almost half (46%)
of the carbon footprint of wine comes from its packing and transportation.
Can’s pack twice as efficiently as bottles are because they are lighter required less energy to be transported.

Portion control
Laithwaites found that the average British household throws away 2 glasses of wine a week. This is equivalent to 17.3 bottles per household annually, or a massive 624 million bottles for the UK population. A quarter of those asked said they opened more than they wanted to drink. 250ml cans address this issue by acting as either a single large glass or when shared, as two small glasses.

– Cans are completely sealed protecting from oxygen degradation and UV
damage.
– Cans chill down in under 30 minutes, compared to an average of 3 hours
for a bottle of wine.
– Cans can be taken anywhere and don’t need a corkscrew.

Availability
Our wines are available for delivery throughout the UK directly from our website http://www.coppercrew.co.uk. We are also working to be stocked in Cambridgeshire independent retailers.

Pricing (from website)
£24.99 + £4.80 shipping for 6-pack (2 bottle equivalent)
£49.99 for 12-pack, with free shipping (4 bottle equivalent)
£99.99 for 24-pack, with free shipping (8 bottle equivalent)

SORAI SAUCES // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to Words You Can Use Ltd for the following content

A TASTE OF BORNEO FOR ALL THE FAMILY
LAUNCHES AT ST FAGANS FOOD FESTIVAL

The boom in home cooking caused by the COVID-19 lockdown inspired an entrepreneur to launch a range of sauces which she hopes will get the whole family cooking together.

Abergavenny-based Sorai is launching its new range of cooking sauces, Aroma, at the first virtual St Fagans Food Festival on September 12 (Saturday).

Founder Maria Stella (pictured above) drew on her life growing up in Borneo to create the sauces. She said: “One of the big things about living as we did in Borneo is cooking and eating together. It’s such an event, a time when families get together and can share cooking skills and stories and laugh together. I noticed during lockdown that families were coming back together to cook here too, so I wanted to give them sauces which will keep that trend going after the pandemic ends.”

“Cooking from scratch is also healthier for us as we know exactly what’s going into a dish. I had been thinking about making cooking sauces for a while and decided this was the time to do it. These sauces are designed to be an integral part of a dish from the start, rather than being something
added to it at the end.”

“The new sauces aren’t as intensely spiced as our other sauces because we want people to add items such as chilli, salt, or pepper to make their dishes to their family’s taste.”

The plant-based cooking pastes can be used in a marinades, stews, casseroles, soups, and stir frying. They join nine other sauces sold under the Sorai banner.

The new cooking sauces are:
– Rendangerous – Addictively enticing with warming aromatic spices.
– Tribal – Wholesome herbs, no-nonsense humble warm tribal flavours.
– LaksaRomin – Rich, aromatic, and infused with 25 ingredients to ignite your taste buds.

Maria said: “I had worked in the public and voluntary sector in England for decades, but when I moved to Wales, I was looking for something different to do so I could continue to spend quality time with my children. So, I created my business with products derived from many years of recipe development having served them to family and friends and at community and corporate events.”

You can attend the first virtual St Fagans Food Festival on the event’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/278328393509516

To make an order, just go to https://www.sorai.co.uk/products and take advantage of the promotional code 10OFF for a 10% discount on any sauces.

MELTED INSIDE // NEW WEBSITE

Thank you to Blueberry PR for the following content

New platform gives artisan food and drink producers opportunity to connect with customers differently

A virtual multi-brand store has been launched to help artisan food and drinks ‘makers’ flourish and discerning shoppers to discover, learn about and purchase mouth-watering products made with passion.

The MeltedInside.com platform welcomes and features makers from across the UK selling everything from seaweed seasoning produced in Yorkshire by SeaGrown  to South American-style biscuits lovingly made by Margot & Montanez in Essex and Cocktails in a Bottle freshly produced on the Kent coast.

Founder Candy Bowles launched the company after difficulties finding out about food and drink options in East Sussex where she lives.

Candy explains: “MeltedInside.com is designed to help shoppers discover amazing and delicious products while giving artisan food and drinks makers a new way to connect with customers. We encourage our makers to take the front stage to tell their stories through videos, podcasts and even recipes and blogs.

“From our research we know there are many independent artisan food and drinks makers who struggle to reach the shelves of supermarket and shops, so I thought to myself there has got to be a better way and I decided to do something about it. Melted Inside aims to make it enjoyable for shoppers to buy from these passionate producers and makes it easier for the artisan makers to engage with more customers and share their incredible stories. I strongly believe that we should all know where our food comes from, who makes it and how it is made. Provenance matters to people more than ever and passionately made, delicious food deserves to be discovered and appreciated wherever you are.”

As well as tasting amazing, some of the produce allows shoppers to help others when they purchase. For instance, 5th Season Fruit supports charity Farm Africa and Harry Specters chocolate provides employment opportunities to people with autism – a condition that the owner cares a lot about for personal reasons.

Candy launched Melted Inside during lockdown to offer people a greater choice of lovingly made products during a time of isolation and social distancing. She describes piloting a new marketplace during the lockdown as “a leap of faith, to put it mildly”.

“Working with the artisan makers is proving a wonderful experience. Their passion and commitment to what they do is simply inspiring and humbling. This realisation helps me appreciate what they make even more and the stories of many of our makers are just fascinating,” she added.

Melted Inside exists to share the love of what artisan makers do every day and the love they put into creating products for shoppers looking to buy real food from real people. To makers, Melted Inside aspires to be seen as an understanding friend and one of their cheerleaders in a market dominated by big, faceless brands.

If you are an artisan food maker and interested in joining Melted Inside please email artisanteam@meltedinside.com

Melted Inside is a member of the Good Market community – a curated platform that makes it easier to find and connect with social enterprises, responsible businesses and changemakers who are creating a better world.

TOO GOOD TO GO // FOOD WASTE APP

Thank you to Too Good To Go for the following content

Daylesford teams up with Too Good To Go to fight food waste

9 September 2020 –  Award winning organic farm, Daylesford, has teamed up with food app with a conscience, Too Good To Go, to help prevent surplus food from going to waste.

The new partnership means food that hasn’t sold from Dayleford’s four Farmshop & Café sites in London is now available for Too Good To Go’s 3 million UK users to rescue.

Too Good To Go lets people buy surplus food from restaurants, retailers and producers to stop it from going to waste. They simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses with unsold food. App users then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ of delicious food, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it.

Sustainability is at the heart of the Daylesford brand and they strive to operate with zero food waste. The relationship with Too Good To Go is designed to complement Dayleford’s long standing charitable partnership with The Felix Project. Where food is not able to be collected and distributed to charities, it will be available for consumers to buy at a reduced price so that no edible food goes to waste.

Carole Bamford, Founder of Daylesford, said: “Eliminating food waste is one of the most important ways we can each help to tackle the environmental crisis and it’s an issue we’ve always been passionate about highlighting and preventing at Daylesford. Our farmshops and cafés already redistribute unsold food and send their kitchen scraps to be composted and used in anaerobic digestion instead of landfill. This new partnership with Too Good To Go is another significant step towards our goal of zero waste and I’m delighted to be working with an organisation who shares our beliefs and values.”

Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Daylesford to the Too Good To Go community of over 4,000 UK partner stores. With their passion for sustainability and appreciation for good food, our partnership is a natural fit.

“One third of all food produced is wasted and we’re dedicated to ensuring that food is enjoyed instead of thrown away. By having brands like Daylesford join our movement, we can continue to spread the word and move closer to our goal of creating a planet with no food waste.”

HARVEYS APERITIVO // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to The Great Endeavour for the following content.

New Harveys Aperitivo is a fresh take on summer sipping.

Let’s face it, summer 2020 will be like no other. With less international travel now a reality, we’re embracing the staycation – whether that’s jumping in your car with a tent and vital supplies in tow or hosting a party in your back garden or local park. New Harveys Aperitivo – a sherry-infused drink – has launched just in time to raise a glass to celebrate being back together… at a distance.

Forget everything you think you know about sherry, Harveys Aperitivo is a truly fresh take on summer’s runaway serve, the spritz.  Exclusive to the UK and developed by the renowned Harveys Bodega in the scorching heat of Jerez in southern Spain, Harveys Aperitivo comes in two flavours – Pink and Orange. Both flavours are best enjoyed poured over ice, topped up with soda water (or lemonade) and finished with a couple of red berries (Pink) or a slice of orange (Orange).

Harveys Orange is a delicious blend of two grape varieties – Palomino and Muscatel – with an aroma of bitter orange, tangerine and aromatic herbs. Harveys Pink is made of three grape varieties – Palomino, Tintilla de Rota (a local rare red wine) and Muscatel – and has a subtle aroma of red fruits and flowers. The delicious result is a low ABV (15%) and low calorie (62 kcal) light, zesty and refreshing serve, made with 100% natural flavours.

And, as the name suggests, Harveys Aperitivo is the perfect drink to enjoy in the late afternoon and early evening.  Channel its rich Spanish heritage and serve it with a delicious array of tapas. Think Manchego cheese, slices of jamon and plump juicy olives, they’re perfect pairings to match the Aperitivo flavours and whisk you away (at least metaphorically) to the sundrenched shores of Andalusia.

Harveys will be sending the usual spritz and sundowners suspects straight to a new supermarket aisle, with both variants of the Aperitivo available on shelves in the sherry aisle. Harveys Aperitivo Pink is available at Tesco stores nationwide, priced £11.50 for a 75cl bottle. Harveys Aperitivo Orange is available in Sainsburys (for a limited time), priced £11.50 for a 75cl bottle.

PURE quickly secured listings in leading bars and exclusive venues such as the W Hotel, Cafe de Paris and the Maxwells Group, and Champneys Spa. Online PURE vodka is sold through dedicated alcohol retailers such as: Master of Malt, The Whisky Exchange and Sybarite Cellars and distributed via Speciality, PH Wines, Champers Wholesale and Enotria
& Coe.

PURE is a homegrown British success story. An idea born from a night out at the local pub and put into action by a single-minded entrepreneur who wanted to find a cleaner, healthier drink to share with his mates.
“The goal was always clear: for PURE to be the good guy in the drinks industry” said Founder, Adam Player.

PURE Vodka is an ultra-premium, clean, organic spirit, built on the foundation of high-quality raw ingredients and owing its unique taste to the finest organic wheat it is derived from.

The journey from field to bottle begins as the wheat is harvested by organic family farmers, who take pride in their fertile, healthy soil; free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. This organic process protects the product that you drink from contaminating substances, as well as protecting the animals and environment around the fields from which
it is produced.

The organic wheat is distilled to maximum purity removing any remaining impurities (including gluten) and cut by hand to vodka strength (40%), creating a light, smooth tasting vodka that is vegan friendly and gluten free.

With Covid-19 causing a huge shift in consumer buying habits, and an increasing focus on quality and value alongside health and wellbeing, the low alcohol market is experiencing a watershed moment.
In May market researcher Nielsen reported strong growth (up 16%) for purchases of low and no alcohol spirits during lockdown, whilst prior to Covid 19 they reported that 67% of GB consumers were proactively trying to lead healthier lifestyles, indicating that PURE is on trend for the new post-covid health conscious customer.

NUDIE SNACKS // NEW PRODUCT

Thanks to Nudie Snacks PR for the following content.

“We are the first to market this product – it’s the perfect snack and doesn’t compromise on taste or quality.”

CHEESECAKE CREATIONS // PRODUCT REVIEW

During lockdown, we were very lucky to receive some delicious cheesecakes from the lovely lady that is Heather. Heather very kindly put together a trio of cheesecakes for us, which comprised up of the following flavours;
– Mint Aero
This was the lightest of the trio, the cheesecake had a lovely zing to it & wasn’t overwhelming with minty-ness. This was also gorgeously decorated – a real eye-catching piece with the bright green colouring.
– Millionaires Shortbread
This was I would say probably the richest in taste, & was the household favourite. Again, gorgeously decorated! Simple, but looked absolutely stunning.
– Fudge Brownie
This one was my personal favourite, as it was rich but wasn’t too sickly – fudge is one of my favourite things! I also really liked that this sort of had the overload-vibe, the type which you don’t want to cut into & fall apart!

The cheesecakes were very rich & intense – we shared 3 small cheesecakes between 4 people, & there truly was more than enough. A little really did go a long way. That being said, this is good in that you get value for money, also with little to no waste at all. If you’re a bigger eater, the cheesecakes are also available full size. I would hands down buy these over shop-bought cheesecakes any day. The flavours offered a lot more depth, & were much more fresher-tasting. I would go as far as to say they are by far the best sweet treat we’ve tried to date (& there has been a lot through this pandemic!)

Not only did the cheesecakes taste amazing, but the detail & presentation was outstanding, the cheesecakes were showpieces in themselves! They’re definitely the sort of thing you don’t want to stick a knife in & ruin.

A huge factor too that made a difference was that not only were the cheesecakes beautiful as well as scrumptious, but Heather also provided fab customer service – there was clear communication throughout, which I think is highly important & really goes a long way. Heather was very clear, & kept us updated on what was going on throughout the process, from getting in contact, discussing flavours, making the cheesecakes & delivering, as well as after!

I’ve been following Heather’s page for a while now, keeping an eye on what she’s been making, & there are some amazing looking bits on there – my favourite now being the savoury cheesecakes – if you are a cheese lover (like me) then that is something you need in your life!

Thank you so much to Heather for allowing us to try these gorgeous desserts – we enjoyed each & every crumb!

NIGEL SMITH // COOKALONG REVIEW

During lockdown, local chef Nigel Smith reached out to us & got us involved with a spectacular cookalong which he put on via social media. As a private hire chef, & the world at a standstill, Nigel took it upon himself to provide the cookalong experience during lockdown, to help all of us stuck at home find something useful & exciting to do. What Nigel offered was a real insight & an introduction to the world of cooking from scratch, which was a lot easier than first anticipated.

Each week, there was a different menu that was released a few days before the cookalong itself along with a list of ingredients which would be required – you could either source these ingredients yourself, or for a small cost, Nigel would put together a bag of the ingredients for you, all weighed & ready to go. We were lucky enough to receive a bag of ingredients, so all we had to do was take part & cook – pretty straightforward!

On the menu of which we joined in with, there was a theme of ‘Movie Night’ & on the menu itself there was;
– Tandoori chicken pizza to be served with mint raita
– Spicy potato wedges
– Chicken bites
– Toffee popcorn

Each dish was prepared separately, & Nigel carefully explained each step. Naturally, a few of us cooking along fell off the wagon a bit but this wasn’t a problem as Nigel was there to ask questions to via Instagram live!

The whole thing was absolutely chaotic, especially if you’ve never sort of prepared anything from scratch before. You’d be dashing around trying to find utensils or new plates all the time! But it really was fun & a great way of learning as a beginner. It was also a really good way of introducing yourself to dishes you perhaps wouldn’t usually opt for.

Hopefully in the future we never experience another lockdown quite like we did over the summer, but should you ever choose to participate in a cookalong, be prepared for a very messy kitchen – perhaps rope someone in to tidy as you’re going along or you will end up with a hell of a lot of washing up to do!

We really did enjoy taking part, & we were really quite surprised at just how easy it is to make things from scratch – it certainly inspired us to cook more, as we then started making things weekly. Of all of the things made, we enjoyed the pizza the most – it had a slight twist as the base was more of a naan base, & it was gorgeous! The wedges were also so simple to do, & beat a bag of frozen ones any day, we now always make these ourselves. The chicken for us didn’t quite go to plan, as we mixed some ingredients up along the way but hey! First time for everything. The popcorn & toffee sauce were stupidly simple to make, & also so satisfying, & of course, so tasty.

A huge thank you to Nigel for getting in touch with us & introducing himself, & what he does with us!

MASTERCARD TO PROVIDE FREE FOOD FOR DINERS!

Thank you to Talker Tailor for the following content.

Mastercard teams up with OpenTable to pick up the bill for diners giving them Priceless Surprises throughout September as part of Dine Local restaurant month

Throughout September OpenTable and Mastercard will be celebrating Dine Local, a month-long homage to dining out, with more than 200 restaurants offering special offers, set menus and added value offerings to diners across the UK and Ireland.

As part of this, Mastercard and OpenTable have also teamed up to surprise and delight lucky diners at 30 restaurants in 30 days across the UK and Ireland with the chance to eat and drink for free* in one of the participating Dine Local restaurants. Every evening during September, Mastercard will treat diners, who are in the right place at the right time, with a Priceless Surprise by paying their bill including food and soft drinks at one of the restaurants taking part in the wider Dine Local campaign.

The UK’s dining industry has experienced a hard few months and whilst diners are showing confidence in eating out again, the Dine Local campaign has been initiated to encourage people to continue to dine out and support their local restaurants and community going forward.

Additionally, as part of the campaign restaurants across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin will offer limited-time, great-value specials to showcase their menus and attract diners. Restaurants get the chance to reconnect with their loyal clientele while attracting new diners to take part in an uplifting local initiative, and diners have a unique opportunity to try out neighbourhood gems while supporting local restaurants. Visit www.opentable.co.uk/restaurantweek to discover the Dine Local restaurants taking part and the special menus available.

The first Priceless Surprise will take place in Hertfordshire on 1st September, before moving to London then across the country to bring truly Priceless moments to diners. OpenTable asks diners to book and support the Dine Local restaurants during the month of September to enjoy great special offers and menus, and be in with a chance to have their bill picked up by MasterCard and OpenTable.

Angela Altvater, Marketing Director, OpenTable EMEA commented “We are pleased to see that the restaurant sector in the UK is slowly recovering. It is clear that many people really missed the experience of dining out at a restaurant over the past few months. As a partner to the industry, it is particularly important for us to help the restaurant community get back on their feet and to get diners excited about dining out again and rediscover old and new favourites in their local area.”

Janne Karppinen, Head of Retail at Mastercard commented on the campaign.“It is great to see people back in restaurants and eating out safely with friends and families. 2020 has been a hard year so we’re pleased to work with OpenTable to bring moments of joy and excitement to customers. We have extended the offer not only to Mastercard customers, but to everyone who is in the restaurant at the right place on the right night – a truly Priceless Surprise.”

All the signs show that people in the UK are eager to get out to dine again. In a recent survey1 conducted by OpenTable, 65% of Brits answered that the thing they were most excited about restaurants reopening was eating delicious food. 94% of those surveyed stated that the support of local restaurants is important to them and 62% said they planned to eat out more or at least as often as before the lockdown.

NATUR BOUTIQUE HIBISCUS TEA // NEW PRODUCT

Thank you to New Chapter Marketing for the following content.

A taste of Mexico in a glass
You might assume that ‘Agua de Jamaica’ is a drink from the Caribbean, but it actually translates as ‘Hibiscus Water’ in Mexico and is a popular beverage drunk as a refreshing accompaniment to a midday
meal.

Sweet and tart at the same time, Hibiscus Water is traditionally made through a relatively long process of rehydrating and straining dried hibiscus flowers, but, thanks to Natur Boutique’s Organic Hibiscus Tea, it’s now super simple…

Make a pot of hibiscus tea, allow to cool, sweeten to your taste
with sugar, add a squeeze of lime (optional) and pour over ice
for a refreshing non-alcoholic drink.

All we need now is some Mexican sunshine!

Natur Boutique’s Hibiscus Tea is available from Ocado, Amazon, Health Stores and naturboutique.co.uk.

Please note: DO NOT USE if pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or suffering with low blood pressure.

THE CRICKETERS (WESTCLIFF) // RESTAURANT REVIEW

Our favourite day of the week at EF is definitely Sunday, as it is the day of good food & indulgence, so when The Cricketers invited us down to try their 3 course Sunday lunch, we were more than happy to oblige.

Now their Sunday lunch menu offers 3 courses at a shockingly low price of just £9.25 per person – seems too good to be true, doesn’t it? And at first, we did sort of wonder just what would be on offer, so naturally we had a peek of the menu to see what we would be getting ourselves in for, and we were pleased to see that there were things we were both happy with.

So, on a bit of a soggy Sunday afternoon we visited the pub – very easy to find, took only around 30/40 minutes from Chelmsford & was hard to miss upon arriving into Westcliff. There was residential parking close by too, so this really is ideal if you’d like to do a Sunday lunch on a budget.

When we entered the pub itself, it was very Covid-friendly – sanitiser readily available & tables really well spaced-out. The first thing we noticed too once we were sat was the fabulous gin menu. The menu was very handy & told you which gins paired with which tonics – perfect! We quickly got our drinks orders in, & both opted for a gin (would’ve been rude not to!) We were served by Giovanna, the bar manager who was ever so friendly & attentive.

Whilst waiting for our drinks, we had a quick glance of the menu. We had already decided what we would go for thanks to our prior nose, however the menu in the pub itself was slightly different & actually offered a couple more things, so there were some slight changes in our decisions.

Our drinks arrived, & Giovanna also explained to us what was in our drinks (dehydrated fruit) & the purpose behind it – definitely a nice little touch getting to understand just why these bits of fruit make it to your drink! At this point, we also placed our food orders, so for starters we went for the pub classic – prawn cocktail, & the lamb & halloumi skewer, & for mains we opted for the roast beef, & the steak & ale pie.

Our food arrived very quickly, I would say we waited no longer than ten minutes for our starters, which was fantastic, there’s nothing worse than being hungry & having to wait ages for your food. The portions were practical – they were small but the mains certainly made up for this. The prawn cocktail was nice & light. A substantial amount of prawns were served on a bed of salad along with four quarters of a slice of wholemeal bread. The prawn cocktail was thoroughly enjoyed & was really tasty. The lamb & halloumi skewer was enjoyable – personally I am not a huge lamb fan, as I find it is very hit & miss but I thought I would give it a go anyway. The lamb was nice, but I did find it a little fatty, however the halloumi definitely made up for this – the halloumi was perfectly cooked & had the right amount of ‘squidge’ to it – I would’ve been happy with just a skewer of halloumi, it was that good! The skewer was also served with a small salad that was coated in tzatziki – this was lovely & fresh, & worked really well with the meat & the cheese. What I also really liked about this being on the menu, was that it was something different from your typical pub food. We were both really pleased with what we received, & were really looking forward to what would come next.

Just like our starters, our mains arrived efficiently – this time, pretty much as soon as our plates had been cleared, the second lot of dishes made their appearance. Both main courses were served as ‘roasts’ so both had all the trimmings of veg including peas carrots & cauliflower cheese, roast & new potatoes, yorkshire pudding, plus gravy & dishes of mustard & horseradish. Our choices were the roast beef & the steak & ale pie. The pair of us were both really looking forward to seeing what the beef would be like – I’ve said before, beef can always go one of two ways, it will either be spot on or it can be really fatty/chewy. We were so pleased to try it & to discover that it was beautifully done! The beef was lovely & had a perfect pink centre. It was really well presented too on the plate & was very generous in sizing. Now, the half of the party that enjoyed the beef roast isn’t a fan of vegetables, but has now been converted due to the cauliflower cheese that was dished up with the roast, so something was done very right here (thank you Cricketers!) Absolutely nothing on this plate was left behind, which says it all really. And at £9.25 – we would’ve happily paid this just for this plate itself, never mind the starter & dessert! We would definitely recommend visiting based on this dish alone.
The second main was the steak & ale pie roast which was huge! The pie was filled with so much meat, & was served with all of the trimmings exactly the same as the roast beef. Unfortunately this time round, the plate wasn’t cleared, only because I was way too full! All of what was eaten was so enjoyable – in particular, the roast potatoes & the cauliflower cheese. The steak was also really good quality, it was lovely & tender.

Next up were our desserts. So there are only 3 things to choose from, so you are quite limited, however at such a low price, you can’t really complain. We shared both of our desserts, as we both wanted to try a bit of each, so our choices here were the cheese board (which has a £1.50 supplement) & the baked jam roll. Again, at such a low price, we didn’t expect a lot, however the jam roll changed everything. What a dessert! Served with cream, this piping hot dessert really blew us over – we were stunned at just how tasty it was! The cheese board didn’t really hold much hope once we’d tried the jam roll, but we still devoured it nonetheless! We enjoyed both desserts, but if we were to tell you to pick 1… it would always be the jam roll!

Thank you so much to The Cricketers for inviting us down – we were totally surprised with just how good the food was, & thank you to Giovanna for such fab hospitality. The pub also offers some themed nights (steak, Italian) which we would definitely consider to try also. We think this place is a gem & look forward to visiting again!

TIDES FORTUNE GIN // NEW PRODUCT

Gin is my tipple of choice, so receiving this luscious bottle during lockdown really was the cherry on top! Tides Fortune Gin is the signature gin produced at the East Coast Distillery on the, located on the North Essex Coast. The gin itself adopts 3 botanicals, including Juniper, Sea Purslane & Sea Buckthorn, & promises to offer happiness to all of us gin lovers!

I am still yet to open & try this gin myself (as I don’t want to waste it by mixing with just tonic/lemonade, but would rather try & discover some new combinations, so all ideas are welcomed!), nonetheless I am already in love with it – just look how beautiful the bottle itself is. I will certainly be upcycling this with some lights for the garden bar for decor.

I am also really excited to see what the future has in store for these guys, and looking forward to getting down to the distillery myself to see what it’s all about.

Thank you to @EastCoastDistillery for getting this over to us, & please do share any gin-spiration with us – I would love to know what you’d pair the gin with.

OUR REMEDY CBD OIL // PRODUCT REVIEW

A little while ago, I was very lucky to receive a product called Our Remedy CBD Oil. Now this is something completely different to what I would normally post about but I am always looking to broaden my horizon, plus this is still an edible product, so it sort of ties in with the foodie background (just about!)

So this product claims to help relieve period pains but with a twist! You can actually use this in no less than… cocktails (check https://ourremedy.co.uk/cbd-cocktails/)! I was beyond excited to give this a go & to see whether it lived up to expectations. Probably TMI but I suffer quite badly from those kind of cramps & pains, mainly a dull backache & the classic punching feeling in the tummy. Anyone who suffers will know just how much the pain can really ruin your day, and retailing between £26.99 – £31.99, I think this is definitely worth splashing out a little more on. Naturally, upon first discovering the product, I was a little sceptical – I did think it was a little gimmicky however I was soon proven wrong! When I first tried the product, I didn’t actually sample it in a drink, but just went straight in consuming only a small dose of the oil. I have to say, it was far more effective than any paracetamol/ibuprofen or even Feminax – so straight off, I would recommend.

What I liked about the product…
Okay, firstly, my favourite thing about the product is that it is pain-relief product than can be used with alcohol – you can add to cocktails to give it a little bit of a peppermint-y taste, or alternatively you can add to a hot chocolate to give it a little bit of a twist!
The product also arrived via DPD which was extremely speedy! I am unsure whether this is standard, or whether it was sent faster due to being a PR product – either way I was very impressed. The package was also gorgeously presented, very neat & very pretty. The heavily-Instagrammable box itself was also filled with other little goodies you might crave or fancy at that time of the month, including the delicious Lindt Truffles, plus a couple of teas & some other ladies’ items!

All in all, I have really enjoyed being able to sample Our Remedy – it’s certainly a product worth investing in if you suffer badly with period pains, & it is a fantastic & much tastier way of relieving pains!

Thank you so much to @OurRemedy for getting this over to us.

NIO stands for ‘Needs Ice Only’ meaning there’s no specialist equipment or ingredients needed to delight in an expertly crafted drink. The steps are simple: get a glass, fill it with ice and simply tear the corner of your sachet and pour the ready-made cocktail in.

Each drink has been expertly crafted by NIO’s Head Mixologist, Patrick Pistolesi, who is also the Head Bartender and Found of Drink Kong, which is on the top 50 Best Bars list.

On the menu, there are 15 pre-batched cocktails to choose from. Whiskey fans can enjoy an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan or Whiskey Sour while Gin-lovers can delight in a Gimlet, Gin Sour or Gin Proved. Not to mention all the classics.

Unique to NIO, all cocktails are sealed in mini flat boxes which can be safely delivered to letterboxes nation-wide. Customers can choose from a 3, 6 or 9 box option. Perfect for picnics in the park or a tipple in the yard, with warmer weather and signs of life returning to some normality, it’s something we can all raise a glass to.

GERMAN DONER KEBAB ‘THE BOSS BOX’ // PRODUCT REVIEW

We recently teamed up with the guys at Deliveroo to get our hands on the new Boss Box from German Doner Kebab. GDK is somewhere we have visited before & really enjoyed, so when we received the invite to take part in this new project, we knew we would be in for a treat. We were gifted with a voucher each to be used via Deliveroo to purchase The Boss Box from GDK – very straightforward! We used the Lakeside branch of GDK as we were visiting anyway, & we opted for collection rather than delivery.

We each enjoyed a meal of The Boss Box, which contains the following
– a kebab of your choice (we both went for the Doner Durum Wrap, mixed meats)
– a side of either Chilli Cheese Bites or Doner Spring Rolls (we had one of each)
– Fries
– 3 of GDKs signature sauces
– a ‘slim’ drink of your choice
(we also added on a few extra bits with the remainder of the vouchers)

The box that the meal itself is presented in is sleek. The box is glossy & black, & certainly gives any other takeaway packaging a run for its money. The box itself to the inside is also presented very neatly – sections are divided so your meal is perfectly spaced, plus there are handy little holders for the sauces too which makes a huge difference & saves the faffing of having to pick up the pots to dip your fries in.

Now onto the food, GDK never disappoints, portion sizes here are extremely generous, & you can add extra salad at no extra cost (which we both did), although saying this, it probably isn’t necessary to do so. The kebabs are fully loaded with meat (you can choose between beef or chicken, or both) & are beyond filling – neither of us finished our kebabs! We did however finish all of our sides. The chilli cheese bites are absolutely delicious (we even ordered extra of these bad boys!), & again, the Doner Spring Rolls are exceptionally generous when it comes to their sizing. Everything at GDK is always bursting with taste & flavour, the only thing that sort of lets the meal down is the fries – the fries are more ‘chips’ as they are slightly chunkier, & to be honest, you could probably do without these anyway as the kebab is just so filling!

The Boss Box will set you back £12.99 but we would say that it is total value for money – you get a lot of food there.

Thank you very much to both Deliveroo & German Doner Kebab.

EAT OUT TO HELP OUT // FISH ON THE QUAY (MALDON) MENUS

BRICK LANE BAGEL CO. // RESTAURANT REVIEW

So here it is… our first ‘lockdown’ outing post! The team at Brick Lane Bagel Co. got in contact with us during lockdown to invite us down to their Theydon Bois branch, which remained opened during lockdown as part of essential services. We were offered a lunch for two, which we thoroughly enjoyed! Our lunches of choice were…
– salt beef bagel with mustard & gherkins
– chicken escalope bagel with melted cheese, lettuce & mayo
plus a couple of drinks (coke & a latte), followed by a delicious, fresh jam doughnut (which we shared between the pair of us as we were full from the bagels!)

The bagels were hearty & delicious! The bread itself was so fresh & so soft, it really contributed to the yumminess of the bagels. The salt beef was ever so tender & truly did melt in the mouth, plus the sheer amount of it was very generous too. The salt beef bagel was absolutely brimming with flavour, thanks to the mustard & gherkins complimenting the beautiful salt beef. The chicken escalope bagel was sensational! A nice big chunk of chicken, served with lashings of lettuce & mayo, plus an oozing cheese centre – it was incredible. Almost like the taste of a chicken burger but much, much better. We opted to have our bagels halved so that between the pair of us, we could each try both different filling, and despite both flavours being exceptional, we agreed that the chicken escalope was our favourite of the two, moreso because it isn’t something either of us would normally go for, but were recommended to try. Following on from our delicious bagels, the pair of us shared a yummy jam doughnut, which just like the bagels, tasted ever so fresh. What also impressed us with the doughnut was the size – forget the typical supermarket sized doughnuts you’d find in a bag, this was double, & of course way better!

What we also picked up on during our time at Brick Lane Bagel Co. was just how busy it was, the business proves to be doing exceptionally well & is clearly a roaring success. During our visit there were always customers present, filling all of the outside seating, despite the lockdown circumstances – this was fantastic to see!

We would also like to point out that this was the friendliest service we have experienced so far – prior to our visit, during & after. Everyone involved could not do enough for us from the staff in the shop itself, to the marketing behind their Instagram page. This is definitely what fantastic customer service is, and it honestly does make all the difference.

Thank you very much to Brick Lane Bagel Co. for inviting us down, we look forward to visiting again.

EAT OUT TO HELP OUT // GOVERNMENT SCHEME

August is fast approaching which means we are closer to being able to make use of the Eat Out To Help Out scheme – a great way for us as customers to try out lots of new places, & also a way for the hospitality sector to start making a recovery. In order to support the scheme, I’m going to be posting menus from various restaurants that will be taking part in the scheme. Menus will primarily be posted to Instagram @essexfoodies, & will also feature on a highlight specifically for Eat Out To Help Out on my Instagram page.
If you’d like to get a menu featured, send over a PDF copy to essexfoodies@gmail.com & I will be more than happy to get this up!

ESSEX CONFECTIONARY // SWEET DELIVERY SERVICE

If you have a sweet tooth, then this is the home delivery for you! A little while back I was very kindly delivered a selection of goodies from the team at Essex Confectionary. I have to say, delivery was extremely quick & I did not expect the sweets to arrive as fast as they did (no complaints here!)
I was given a pick n mix pouch which was absolutely stuffed with colourful sweets. There were a variety of jellies, both new & old school as well as a classic Refresher in there too. These pouches start at £5 for 500g, which to be quite honest, is really reasonably priced in comparison to what you’d pay in a shop or at a market. I was also given a Malteser box which was packed with, you guessed it, Malteser treats! These are charged at £7, making them ideal for a present. I would say that all of the goodies from Essex Confectionary are ideal for a loved one as a surprise, a birthday gift or even just a treat for yourself. They even offer Big Night In bundles which are perfect for movie nights (a great idea if you’ve got kids to entertain, & certainly a lot cheaper than a cinema trip!)

All sorts of treats are available, whether you are a jelly fan or more of a chocolate fan. I loved everything that I received, & I would certainly make an order for myself.

Thank you to Essex Confectionary!

MISS TEASMITH – PRODUCT REVIEW

So recently here at Essex Foodies I have had the absolute pleasure of sampling a selection of fine loose leaf teas courtesy of Miss Teasmith. I received samples of 5 different flavours/styles of teas, all very different from one another. The different teas were made up of –

Ceylon Chai – comprising of Sri Lankan black tea & the spices of this tropical island.

Dark Romance – comprising of Sri Lankan black tea, cocoa shells & nibs, liquorice & mint, described as ‘pudding in a tea cup!’

Rooibos & Passion – comprising of rooibos, passionfruit, rose petals & rhubarb pieces (no caffeine).

Empa-Tea – a ginger & lemongrass herbal infusion.

Earl on the Moor – an orange black tea blend, made with blood orange & lavender.

Each of the teas were exceptionally different from one another, as to be expected, and each offered their very own take on a cup of tea. To start with, the Ceylon Chai was very bold, & very strong. Personally, I love a strong cup of tea (only a splash of milk, no sugar for me), so this is certainly something I would go for every day, alongside Earl on the Moor. EOTM has been my favourite out of the teas as it offers a slight twist on a classic, yet remains mellow & smooth. As I say, I would happily drink these every day! Next up we have got Empa-Tea. I found this tea a little too strong for my liking, I’m not a huge fan of really creative teas so I found this a little bit too overpowering for myself, not because the tea itself was too strong, but more because I find ginger can sometimes be a bit too much, however I would recommend this if you like your teas slightly more different tasting & you like a stronger, more different flavoured bold tea (think along the lines of peppermint for example). Onto Dark Romance, this was the tea I was most excited to try as it offers a completely different take on a cup of tea, described by Miss Teasmith herself as ‘pudding in a teacup’ – essentially dessert with less calories, perfect! I really liked the idea of this tea being dessert like, & it really did get me wondering just what it would taste like, so when the time came, I was not disappointed! The tea is lovely & strong yet sweet & dessert like – something very unusual but a welcomed twist. Lastly we have Rooibos & Passion, another tea I was very much looking forward to trying. I love all things passionfruit, so this was one I was certainly intrigued by. The tea itself was almost peachy, very smooth & full of fruity character. Almost tasting just like summer (think of those iced teas you would purchase in a supermarket on holiday!) It’s a strange way to describe a drink but I would say it was very feminine – perfect for a girls afternoon for example, so forget cocktails, & pour yourself a tea, hot or perhaps wait for it to cool, serve chilled & over lots of ice on a lovely sunny day.

Thank you so much to Miss Teasmith for getting these lovely teas over to Essex Foodies, with lockdown still ongoing my plan is to enjoy them with friends, as restrictions ease, with some lovely socially-distanced afternoon teas. To get your hands on these goodies, simply visit www.missteasmith.com & sign up for 20% off of your first order, as well as free delivery over orders of £25.

COSMO WORLD BUFFET (ROMFORD)

A little while back we were invited to Cosmo – a world buffet restaurant located in Romford. After hearing such good things & reading rave reviews about the restaurant, we were really excited to try it out for ourselves.

Our first visit left a lot to be desired – service was quite poor, & in all honesty there wasn’t really any reason for it to be, the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy but we were left unimpressed when not a single member of staff came over to check if everything was okay or to offer any more drinks. The food wasn’t especially great either. In particular we found it to lack a little in flavour (although it’s hard to judge & generalise when there is so much on offer).

This feedback was all passed on to the marketing agency who organised the opportunity for us, which was then passed back on to the restaurant, & as a result we were invited back for a second visit.

The second visit was much, much better. Service was exceptional & the staff honestly couldn’t do enough for us, from the moment we entered to the moment we left! Drinks arrived a lot quicker the second time round, & we were checked on several times to make sure our glasses weren’t empty – a much better result.

The food the second time round was also better, we wouldn’t go as far as saying the food here is great but if you’re looking for somewhere to go that can cater for everyone then this is definitely the place. With so many cuisines to choose from, it’s perfect for those that are fussy! In particular we found the Chinese cuisine to be the best – this was the most flavourful & probably the best quality. The Indian dishes we found to be quite hot but not an enjoyable hot. We did also sample some bits from the teppanyaki counter which included the steak, salmon & prawns. Portions here are really limited (you can pick a maximum of 2 meats/fishes per visit) & we found that the wait was quite a while, especially on a Friday evening. It also seemed to be a bit of a free for all with people trying to jump the queue & shouting at the chef to see if their food was ready.

All in all, our visits here were okay, the second visit was a lot better & it was great to see the restaurant take on board what we had fed back previously, it goes to prove that feedback in essential & can really make a difference – (which is what we are here for!) We would like to point out that our visits were not negative but could definitely be improved. It’s probably not somewhere we would pick to visit out of choice, but this is also due to other factors including distance & price – we tend to find buffets aren’t value for money if you’re not going to eat loads & loads!

Thank you so much to Cosmo for having us & to Holly @ Distinctly PR for organising!

BARN FARM DRINKS // PRODUCT REVIEW

A little while back, we received a lovely selection of juices from Barn Farm Drinks – all locally produced on the Essex/Suffolk border.

Each flavour was presented in a tall glass bottle (perfect for recycling) & boasted a large serving. All of the flavours were as tasty as each other &
offered something unique – I would say they were not the standard/plain raspberry, apple, blackcurrant flavours you’d normally find, but rather a welcomed mix!

I would definitely choose to have these again, & would certainly pick them over a bottle of Coke any day!

Thank you to Barn Farms Drinks for gifting us with their drinks.

GIN & TONIC LOAF // RECIPE

Thank you to Baking with Ames (@bakingwithames) for the following content

Dairy free gin and tonic loaf

What you’ll need:
For the loaf For the syrup
200g dairy free butter 125g caster sugar
200g caster sugar 125ml tonic water
4 eggs, beaten 2 tbsp gin
200g self-raising flour Icing sugar
½ tsp baking powder
The zest of 1 lime
100ml (3 fl oz) gin

How to make:
– Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) mark 4. Line base and sides of a 900g  (2lb) loaf tin with baking parchment, or insert a premade loaf tin case. In a large bowl beat butter and sugar until pale in colour and fluffy.
– In a separate bowl / mug beat the eggs together, and gradually add to the butter and sugar mix.
– Now, fold in the flour, baking powder and lime zest. Make sure everything is fully mixed in and add the gin. Spoon into your loaf tin and bake for around 45 minutes – you may need longer so always check with a skewer to check it’s cooked through. Your skewer should come out clean when its cooked.
– While your loaf is cooking start making the sugar syrup. Heat the caster sugar and tonic water in a small pan, until the sugar dissolves. Once dissolved, boil the syrup for 2 minutes.
– Spoon 3tbsp of the syrup into a small bowl and mix in 2tbsp of the gin – this will be used to soak your cake. Remove the pan of remaining syrup off the heat and let it cool.
– When your cake is cooked, poke holes into the top with a skewer and drizzle the syrup/gin mixture. Once you’ve done this, take the cake out of the loaf tin and allow to cool on a wire rack.
– Meanwhile, when the sugar syrup has cooled mix in some icing sugar until you have a glossy white mixture perfect for drizzling over the top of your cooled loaf.
– When the loaf is cool drizzle your icing and leave to set before serving.

CAFE BRAZIL // CHRISTMAS MENU

We’re treating you to another Christmas menu – this time it’s Cafe Brazil’s festive offering! This is one I’m going to be checking out- I think it’s great value for money, & you will also receive a complimentary glass of fizz – what’s not to love?!
